Tamil Nadu is a land that celebrates a wide variety of festivals. With their colorful rangolis, magnificent celebrations, beautiful women clad in silk sarees, temples, flowers and the festival food all makes one wait for the festivals. One of the most famous Tamil festival is Pongal which is celebrated yearly by the farmers as a mark of giving thanks to the Sun God.

During this festival a sweet dish called Pongal is prepared and offered to the Sun God for the good harvest that year. If you get to visit any village in Tamil Nadu during Pongal, you will be offered the honey suckling sweet dish topped with dry grapes and cashews.

Jallikattu is another sport associated with Pongal which catches a lot of audience who gather to witness the bulls being tackled.

The Chithirai festival is celebrated in Madurai and marks the Meenakshi Thirukalyanam along with Lord Alagar crossing the flooded river.

This festival is celebrated in all the villages where the River Vaigai flows. The Karthigai Deepam festival that is celebrated all over Tamil Nadu where the houses are beautifully decorated with lit lamps.

Other festivals include the mighty Mahamaham Festival, Thiruvaiyaru Festival, Thaipusam and Natyanjali Dance festivals. Deepavali is also celebrated in much pomp and grandeur here as an ode to Lord Vishnu slaying the demon Narakasuran
