Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary or Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India. Established in 1973, the sanctuary spans approximately 344.44 sq. Km, ranking as the second-largest sanctuary in Kerala. It consists of four ranges: Sulthan Bathery, Muthanga, Kurichiat, and Tholpetty, each offering distinct landscapes and biodiversity. With lush green forests and diverse wildlife, including rare and endangered species, the sanctuary is a haven for nature enthusiasts.
The sanctuary is now an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, bordered by the protected areas of Nagarhole National Park and Bandipur National Park in Karnataka to the northeast, and Mudumalai National Park in Tamil Nadu to the southeast. The Western Ghats, Nilgiri Sub-Cluster (6,000+ km2), which includes the entire sanctuary, is currently being considered by the World Heritage Committee for designation as a World Heritage Site.
Situated on the Deccan Plateau, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary primarily features south Indian moist deciduous teak forests, along with pastures of west-coast semi-evergreen trees. It is a protected habitat for elephants, and visitors can often witness herds of elephants roaming the area. Elephant rides are organized by the Kerala Forest Department.
With special permission from the Wildlife Sanctuary, visitors can enjoy an elephant ride, embark on a guided birding tour led by professional birders and naturalists, or opt for a walking tour for those physically fit.
