Thiruvananthapuram Zoo
The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, also known as Trivandrum Zoo, is situated in the city of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, India. Established in 1857 by Maharaja Swati Thirunal, the zoo is one of the oldest in India. Spanning 55 acres (22 ha), it features woodland, lakes, and lawns. Its inception was a collaborative effort involving Mr J.A. Brown, former Director of Thiruvananthapuram Observatory, and General Cullen, the former British Resident.
Designed by Mr. George, the landscapes of the Trivandrum Zoo are reminiscent of the London Zoo. Established with the primary goal of promoting wildlife conservation, particularly for endangered species, and offering recreational opportunities for the public, the zoo spans 55 acres of picturesque woodland, adorned with lush green lawns and serene lakes. Home to nearly 100 species of indigenous and exotic animals, including Asiatic Lions, Indian Rhinoceroses, Lion-Tailed Macaques, Nilgiri Langur, Royal Bengal Tigers, Leopards, and Asian elephants, the zoo provides a habitat for diverse wildlife.
Featuring a botanical garden, the zoo is a paradise for plant enthusiasts, boasting a diverse collection of tropical trees and an orchid house. The museum complex on-site showcases Napier artefacts and natural history exhibits. With its focus on conservation, education, and recreation, the zoo serves as a crucial contributor to environmental preservation and offers an enriching experience for visitors.
