About Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary
The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Western Ghats of Karnataka,
Originally designated as the Jagara Valley Game Reserve in 1951, then upgraded to the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary in 1974. It became the 25th Project Tiger Reserve in 1998. The sanctuary is also home to the "Jagara Giant," a giant teak tree around 400 years old. The sanctuary is part of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bhadra Dam and Reservoir
Located near the Lakkavalli village, the Bhadra Dam offers scenic views of the surrounding hills and the reservoir it creates. The reservoir's waters cover many small islands that are a haven for migratory birds for picturesque sunsets, boating on the reservoir, and birdwatching.
Jagara Giant Teak Tree: This massive teak tree, located in the Muthodi region, is believed to be around 400 years old. It is one of the biggest attractions within the sanctuary due to its impressive size, standing as a living testament to the ancient forest.

Hebbe Falls
This two-tiered waterfall is nestled in a private coffee estate within the sanctuary.
The falls drop from a height of 168 meters and are divided into Dodda Hebbe (big falls) and Chikka Hebbe (small falls). The bumpy jeep ride and short trek to reach the falls are part of the adventure. The sight of the water cascading down amidst dense forests and medicinal herbs, and the adventurous journey to get there, but the paths are not too slippery.
Muthodi and Lakkavalli Safari Ranges
The sanctuary is divided into two eco-tourism zones, Muthodi in the south and Lakkavalli
in the north, both offering jeep, bus, and boat safaris. The safaris provide opportunities to see tigers, leopards, elephants, and Indian bison, along with numerous species of birds, reptiles, and butterflies. Wildlife viewing, including possible tiger and leopard sightings, especially during the dry season when animals gather near watering holes.
Trekking and Birdwatching
The sanctuary offers designated trekking trails and is a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 250 species of birds, including the Malabar trogon and great Indian hornbill. The 3.5 km nature trail at the Muthodi camp is a popular option.
Best Time to Visit Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary
Season: October to March is the ideal time for comfortable weather and excellent wildlife sightings, as well as for birdwatching, general wildlife viewing and birdwatching due to pleasant weather and active animals.
Summer (March to May): For spotting more animals like tigers, elephants, bison, and various birds at watering holes, visit during the hotter months of March to May. Ornithologists, photographers, and hobbyists interested in a wide variety of birds also good for spotting animals at water sources but can be hot.
Monsoon (June to September): The monsoon season (June to September) is not ideal for wildlife sightings due to heavy rains, and the sanctuary is lush and green, but heavy rains can make some areas inaccessible and wildlife spotting more challenging. Check with the sanctuary for precise timing, but a typical slot is from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM.
For a full-day itinerary, plan for the morning safari around 6:00 AM, followed by lunch, and then a potential afternoon safari around 3:00 PM.
Morning (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM): Arrive at the sanctuary before 6:00 AM to collect your tickets for the early morning safari. Embark on the first jeep safari, which is ideal for spotting animals when they are most active.
Midday (9:00 AM - 3:00 PM): Have a break and enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant or a picnic spot. Visit the Bhadra Dam Viewpoint to take in the scenic views.
Afternoon (3:00 PM - 6:00 PM): Take the second jeep safari of the day, which typically starts around 3:00 PM. Enjoy the late afternoon as wildlife becomes active again.
Evening (after 6:00 PM): Depart from the sanctuary.

In April – May, Weather will be Hot and humid, with temperatures ranging from 22°C to 36°C and Very hot, Good for wildlife spotting around water sources. Light, breathable, loose-fitting clothes, Hats and sunglasses are essential. In off season June – September weather will be Heavy monsoon rainfall, high humidity, and lush greenery. Many activities like trekking and safaris may be restricted due to heavy rain.

By air: The closest airport is Mangalore Domestic Airport, approximately 185 km away.
Bangalore International Airport is another option, located about 285 km away.
From either airport, you will need to take a taxi or bus to reach the sanctuary.
By train: The nearest railway station is Kadur, which is about 51 km from the sanctuary.
By road: Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is accessible by bus and taxi from major cities in Karnataka.
The most common starting points are Shimoga about 33 km away and Chikmagalur about 38km away from sactuary. There is frequent local bus service from cities like Bhadravathi to the sanctuary area.
