The temple is renowned for its inscriptions from the 10th to the 13th century and is associated with the origin of the Onam festival. The story is intertwined with the story of Mahabali and Lord Vishnu's Vamana avatar.
Mahabali, a generous Asura king, ruled from Thrikkakara, and the gods, envious of his popularity, sent Lord Vishnu as Vamana to curb Mahabali's reign in Kerala. In the story, Vamana, disguised as a Brahmin boy, requested three paces of land from Mahabali. When the king granted the wish, Vamana revealed his identity, enlarged to a gigantic figure, and covered the heavens and earth with his steps. Unable to fulfil his promise, Mahabali offered his head for the third step. Pleased with the king's devotion, Lord Vishnu granted Mahabali the annual visit to Kerala during Onam to ensure the well-being of his people. The people of Kerala believe that Mahabali returns to visit them during the festival of Onam.
Thrikkakara Vamanamoorthy Temple is built in the traditional Kerala architectural style with open courtyards and a sanctum sanctorum. The main shrine features the idol of Vishnu in the form of Lord Vamana preparing to place his foot on King Mahabali, a Brahmin Asura. The temple complex also includes a Shiva temple, renovated in 2014, housing idols of Shiva, Ganesha, Karthikeya, and Durga.
