Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple, situated in the heart of Kottayam, is one of the 108 revered Shivalayas in central Kerala, India, established by Lord Parasurama. Dating back 500 years, it was built by the Raja of Thekkumkur and holds unique sculptures and murals of Hindu deities. This ancient shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva resides here in his most peaceful form, blessing Kottayam with prosperity. Legend has it that the idol of Shiva was personally installed by the sage Parasurama and revered as the paradevatha (tutelary deity) by the Thekkumkur royal family.

Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple, built in traditional Kerala architectural styles, encompasses a small Ganapathi temple at the entrance and spans 4 acres of lush greenery. Its impressive Koothambalam, located in the southeast corner, is said to be one of the largest Koothambalams in Kerala. The two-story square-shaped Sreekovil features a golden Finial and houses separate rooms, including the Garbhagriha with the Shiva Linga idol and an idol of Parvathi Devi made of Panchaloha. The temple's murals narrate stories of Shiva and Dasavatharam (the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu) that attract large crowds. Due to its reverence as a Shiva shrine, full circumambulation is not permitted.
