Tali Shiva Temple – Ancient Lord Shiva Temple in Kozhikode

Standing majestically in the heart of Kozhikode city, Kerala, Tali Shiva Temple is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was constructed in the 14th century by the Zamorins of Calicut. Some historians believe the Tali Temple was made even before the city was built. The temple, once the family temple of the Zamorins, is now under Malabar Devaswom, with the Zamorin serving as the managing trustee. It is one of the oldest temples in Kozhikode.

Built in traditional Kerala architectural style, the two-storied sanctum-sanctorum resembles a chariot and features murals and granite sculptures depicting Shiva's retinue. Here, the presiding deity, Lord Shiva is in the form of Uma Maheswara. The Jyothirlingam in the Sanctum Sanctorum is believed to have been installed by Parasurama towards the end of Dwapara Yuga.

The temple hosts Revathi Pattathanam, an annual cultural and intellectual event lasting seven days, held every October to November. It is also a popular tourist attraction in Kozhikode. The Revathi Pattathanam function attracts eminent people and philosophers every year. Topics such as Bharatha Meemamsa, Prabhakara Meemamsa, Vedanta Meemamsa, and Vyakarana were discussed during these gatherings. The highlight of the event is the conferring of the title Bhatta, along with a panakizhi (purse of money), to selected scholars. In the 15th and 16th centuries, eighteen poets participated in this event. The ceremony begins with flag hoisting in the Shiva and Krishna temples during the Malayalam month of Medam and concludes with an Arattu.
