St. Mary’s Forane Church – Historic Syro-Malabar Church in Kerala
St. Mary’s Forane Church, nestled along the serene banks of the River Pamba in Champakulam is a prominent landmark in Alappuzha, Kerala. The Church is affiliated with the Syro-Malabar Church under the Arch eparchy of Changanacherry and serves as a Forane church overseeing several parishes. It was declared a basilica by Pope Francis and Mar Joseph Perumthottam, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Changanacherry, on 27 November 2016. This basilica holds the distinction of being the first in the Archdiocese of Changanassery, the fourth in the Syro-Malabar Church, the ninth in Kerala, and the twenty-third in India.

The church is known by several names, Champakulam Kalloorkadu Marth Maryam Basilica or Champakulam Valiya Palli. Believed to have been built in 427 CE, it is regarded as one of the oldest Christian churches in India and serves as the mother church for most Catholic Syrian churches in the Alleppey District.
The majestic white edifice on banks of the mesmerizing river, showcases a blend of Syrian and Portuguese architectural styles, radiating regal elegance. The tranquil backwaters and swaying coconut palms surrounding the church create a charming atmosphere.
The Champakulam church is adorned with numerous rock inscriptions that offer insights into its rich history. Notably, it houses the ancient open-air Rock Cross, documented to date back to AD 1151, among other archaeological artifacts.
Beyond its architectural grandeur, St. Mary's Forane Church is a testament to India's Christian heritage. It is said that this humble church played a pivotal role in reconciling Catholic and Jacobian Syrians three centuries ago.
