Nestled within a dense green forest grove, Mannarasala Nagaraja Temple stands as an internationally renowned sanctuary for serpent worship, revered as one of the largest Nagaraja Temples in Kerala. Dedicated to the serpent God, Nagaraja, the temple is located in Haripad, in the Alleppey district of Kerala. The gorgeous temple amid the lush forest setting, offers a tranquil ambience enhanced by the abundance of surrounding trees. Notably unique, the temple is served by the senior most lady of a Brahmin family, referred to as Mannarasala Amma, who conducts rituals and poojas.

Boasting nearly 30,000 serpent idols in various sizes along its paths and amidst the trees, Mannarasala Nagaraja Temple is steeped in history. Its origin is intertwined with the tale of Parasurama, the creator of Kerala, who, seeking Lord Shiva's blessings, was directed to worship Nagaraja. Pleased with Parasurama's penance, Nagaraja appeared, blessing him with desalinated land and an eternal presence in Kerala. To preserve the sanctity, Parasurama appointed Brahmins, Tantric experts, and Ashtavaidyas.
A poignant legend tells of Vasudeva and Sreedevi, a childless Brahmin couple, who tended to serpents injured by a forest fire. In gratitude, Nagaraja appeared, promising to incarnate as their son, leading to the birth of a five-headed serpent and a human child. As the serpent child grew, he instructed certain rituals and vanished into the cellar, where it is believed he meditates for the prosperity of his dependents. The temple's unique rituals are conducted by a priestess, maintaining a tradition shaped by Nagaraja's divine instructions. This spiritual haven, with its rich history and sacred practices, remains an enduring symbol of reverence and devotion.
