Arthunkal Church – Famous St. Sebastian Shrine in Kerala
Arthunkal Church or St. Andrews Basilica in Arthunkal is regarded as the largest shrine of St Sebastian in the world. It is situated in Arthunkal, Cherthala, Alappuzha district, Kerala, India. The Church was built by Portuguese missionaries during the 16th century. As one of the oldest churches in the region, it holds significant historical and religious importance.

The grand annual feast of St. Sebastian in January draws millions of pilgrims to Arthunkal Church, making it a prominent pilgrimage destination in India. Known as the "Makaram Perunnal," this feast at the Basilica is celebrated fervently throughout the month. Devotees from various parts of the state visit the church during the feast days to express their faith and devotion. A notable ritual occurs on the final day of the festival, where devotees crawl on their knees from the nearby beach to the church. The church is believed to possess miraculous powers, capable of healing physical ailments and mental disorders.
Facing west towards the long white-sand beach along the Arabian Sea shoreline, Arthunkal Church showcases extraordinarily beautiful and elegant architecture. The Church houses a striking statue of St. Sebastian, depicting him pierced with arrows which was brought from Milan.
On July 9, 2010, the Arthunkal St. Andrews Basilica, the first Parish of the Diocese of Alleppey, was elevated to the status of a Basilica by Catholic Church authorities. This recognition marked it as the first Minor Basilica in the Diocese of Alleppey, the seventh in Kerala, and the third of the Latin Catholic Church in the state.
