Andalur Kavu – Sacred Theyyam Temple and Grove in Kerala

Andalur Kavu, situated at Andalur in Dharmadam village of Thalassery, Kannur is one of the ancient temples in the North Malabar region of Kerala. It stands as a prominent Thiyya Community Urayima temple, revered by devotees for generations. This sacred site, dedicated to Lord Rama, counts among the Abhimana Kshethrams of Vaishnavites. According to interpretations, Sree Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is believed to have established this Kavu. Sree Rama, Lakshmana, Hanuman and Sita Devi are the main deities of Sree Andalurkavu.

Andalur Kavu - Kerala

This temple holds a tale of Thacholi Othenan, a formidable Kalarippayattu warrior of Kerala, who created turmoil in the Thiyyar-dominated Andalur Kavu of Thalassery. In response, the Thiyyars took action, punishing and defeating Othenan, who subsequently left the region, crossing the country via a bridge.

One significant aspect of this temple is its two Kavus (shrines) – the Mele Kavu (Upper Shrine) symbolizing Ayodhya and the Thazhe Kavu (Lower Shrine) as Darika. Various myths surround Andalur Kavu. Legend has it that during Sita Swayamvaram, a spark from Lord Rama's broken bow fell at the Thazhe Kavu and split into three. Impressed by its divine power, Sage Narada instructed Lord Parasurama to install three deities representing Daivathaar, Ankakkaran, and Bappooran.

At Andalur Kavu, Thira (also known as Theyyam or Theyyattam) is the main worship ritual. During its annual 7-day festival, which commences in the second week of February, more than ten Theyyams are performed. This festival, also known as Kaliyattam, is performed based on stories from the epic Ramayana where Daivathaar Theyyam represents Lord Rama, Bappooran Theyyam represents Lord Hanuman, and Ankakkaran Theyyam represents Lord Lakshmana.
