About Science City Museum
Science City Kolkata, inaugurated in 1997 under the able guidance of National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), is a center for learning science built on a reclaimed 50-acre wasteland junk dump garbage dump. West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu and Nobel Prize winner Paul Jozef Crutzen launched Convention Centre Complex on 21 December 1996 and Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral launched the entire Science Centre on 1 July 1997. Earth Exploration Hall was launched as its second phase in 2008 and Science Exploration Hall in 2016. It is run by NCSM and has more than 200 interactive displays in maritime history galleries, space exploration galleries, evolutionary biology, and upcoming technologies. Facilities consist of ancient navigational equipment, dinosaur robots, and illusions. As a country-class museum, it is committed to science-led awareness, serving school groups, scientists, and the general public, pointing to the balance between sophisticated modernity and India's scientific heritage and nature preservation.
What to Expect
Science City Kolkata is science and education synergy within modern geometric structures and green belts. It is an operational but educational area where hobbyists, school children, and families put together are compelled to try out experiments that make science transparent.
Start with the Earth Exploration Hall, a half-ellipse two-story exhibition hall whose gawky hemispherical halves of the model of the Earth and video screens for interaction, computer 3D projections, sloping tables, and kiosks are used to examine geography, global climatic change, natural hazards, vegetation, wildlife, and ecosystems for an international travel.
23-meter slope dome full-dome 3D planetarium Space Theatre 360 seating capacity is equipped with high-definition immersive showings such as "Voyager – The Never-Ending Journey" (26:40 minutes) on 150 special effects projectors for astronomy and space exploration cosmic quest.
Within Dynamotion Hall, its ceiling-fanned interior space, discover more than 40 interactive physics exhibits: play the floor piano, blow gigantic bubbles, create computer graphics illusions, or see the "Science on a Sphere" 30-minute presentation projecting environmental data onto a 1.8-meter globe. The Freshwater Aquarium boasts some 1,000 fish in 39 aquariums, piranhas and Oscars included, and the Butterfly Enclosure contains live touch and films.
Evolution of Life – A Dark Ride is a 20-minute dark ride featuring seven scenes and 56 robot figures depicting the evolution of life from prehistoric and dinosaur times to modern-day human being. Panorama on Human Evolution is 360-degree projection for the latest 6 million years of evolution.
Thrill rides include the Time Machine, a 30-seat six-degrees-of-freedom virtual time machine ride simulator, and 3D Vision Theatre using Polaroid glasses and stereo projection to show education movies. The Mirror Magic is made up of a 35-room light reflection maze in the form of distorted tubes and circular-encircling trains.
Maritime Centre, a replica ship, takes India's maritime history to present floors, dioramas, scale models, and computer-based navigation quiz. Weather-proof non-in-the-Science Park rides include Caterpillar Ride, Gravity Coaster, Musical Fountain and Road Train, Cable Cars for bird's eye view, Monorail Cycle, butterfly nursery, maze, and physical science exhibitions such as motion of transverse wave.
Science Exploration Hall (5,400 sq.mt) discusses new technology, evolution, human landscape, and India's science heritage.
Amenities include picnic gardens, toilets, car park, and an infant care center but no canteen—take a snack or buy one in the city. Wheelchair accessible halfway with ramps; take walking shoes since the property is enormous. Weekdays are serene; weekends are pandemonium. Special shows, master workshops, and live demonstrations are its magic. Take 3-5 hours for an interactive experience that teaches, amuses, and amazes at science magic.
Things to do at Science City Museum
Spend an entire day with science at Kolkata Science City. Begin the day by experiencing some interactive things in Dynamotion Hall, such as object levitation, illusion games, or Science on a Sphere environmental show. Early morning visit to Maritime Centre's dioramas and artefacts will be an interest to history enthusiasts.
Experience live interactive shows in Space Theatre for space travel or 3D Vision Theatre for stereo movie screenings. For an adrenaline rush, visit the Time Machine simulator ride to travel back in time in simulated mode, Evolution of Life – A Dark Ride to experience robotic dinosaurs and evolution scenarios, or Cable Car for bird's-eye view.
Look out at the Science Park: ride a Gravity Coaster, Road Train, or Musical Fountain, or be creative with activity in the butterfly nursery. Witness workshops or live shows in the Science Exploration Hall of new technology and the triumph of humanity's success.
Picnics are also organized by the families in the gardens, shutterbugs relishing the good architecture (no additional charges for cameras). They represent the scientific heritage of the city.

Best Time to Visit Science City Museum
Best season to visit Kolkata's Science City is October to March when Kolkata weather is pleasant, not hot, 15°C to 25°C, ideal time to wander around open exhibits and rides without having to endure hot summer (April-June, up to 40°C) or rainy monsoon (July-September).
Frosty and cool winter months (December-February) complement walking around the 50-acre complex and spots like Cable Car or Science Park. Avoid summer since moisture exhausts indoor and outdoor touring. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of weekdays are off-season compared to weekends and holidays, perfect for walking around displays and brief waiting times for such facilities like Space Theatre or Dark Ride. Smaller crowds and cleaner air, morning (10 AM-1 PM) perfect time for families or groups. Other festivals such as Durga Puja (October) include special shows or workshops with extra cultural context but full—check official website for info. School breaks (May-June, December) have more family group visitors, so go during weekdays to enjoy an uninterrupted, worthwhile experience. Issues are regarding all-year-round utilization of site but fine weather contributes to overall enjoyment of its blend of indoor museums and open green parks.
