Kerala Wayanad Heritage Museum
The Wayanad Heritage Museum, also known as the Ambalavayal Heritage Museum, is located in Ambalavayal, 12 km south of Sultan Bathery, in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India. Managed by the District Tourism Promotion Council, it is renowned as one of the largest and finest archaeological museums in Kerala. The museum boasts a vast collection of artefacts dating back to the second century, making it a significant cultural and historical attraction in the region.
The Wayanad Heritage Museum exhibits a fascinating collection of artefacts that illuminate the history, culture, and heritage of the Wayanad region. Notably, the museum is organized into four distinct blocks: Veerasmruthi, Gothrasmruthi, Devasmruthi, and Jeevanasmruthi. The Veerasmruthi block showcases pictorial rock edicts, including Hero Stones. Tribal life artefacts are displayed in the Gothrasmruthi and Devasmruthi blocks. The Jeevanasmruthi block features terracotta figurines, hunting traps, ornaments, and artworks excavated from the Malabar region, along with stone idols dating back to the 12th century. Additionally, the museum exhibits models of burial chambers used by Wayanad tribes. One of the highlights of this museum is its multimedia theatre, which screens documentaries and docudramas related to the museum.
