The history of Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica traces back to the arrival of Portuguese missionaries in 1500 CE, with construction beginning under the first Portuguese Viceroy, Dom Francisco de Almeida, in 1505. It was given a cathedral status by Pope Paul IV in 1558. The church underwent reconstruction and was consecrated on November 19, 1905. In 1984, Pope John Paul II elevated its status to a Basilica due to its historical and artistic importance.
In addition to its religious significance, the magnificent Santa Cruz Basilica is renowned for its stunning Gothic style architecture, featuring a breathtaking altar and majestic arches.
