Gentle Giants South India's Elephants

The first elephants you will see on your tour were carved into living rock more than 1000 years ago. Mahabalipuram was an ancient sea port and capital of various empires and as such attracted the patronage of South Indian rulers through many centuries. On a tour of the town’s bas relief carvings (including Arjuna’s Penance- the largest such carving in the world), the UNESCO World Heritage listed Shore Temple and the Five Rathas, you will get an insight into the culture which has thrived in Tamil Nadu in an unbroken run stretching back into antiquity. The modern town of Mahabalipuram is a compact seaside village, bursting with seafood restaurants, and alive with the sound of chisel on stone as today’s artists create their own stone masterpieces.

Drive 2 hours down the coast to Pondicherry, a former French enclave with a distinct atmosphere. Walk along the beach front promenade, reminiscent of southern Europe, and explore the French Quarter with its leafy boulevards, designer boutiques, and quaint cafes. Visit the Aurobindo Ashram, a spiritual community dedicated to the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. In the afternoon, explore Auroville, an international township dedicated to sustainable living and spiritual growth.

Overnight in Pondicherry.

This is a big day of temples - depart after breakfast and drive 1 hour to Chidambaram, home to a massive Shiva temple complex. Proceed on to Gangaikonda Cholapuram (40 mins drive), a lesser-known yet grand Chola temple built by Rajendra Chola I. This temple, known for its stunning architecture and intricate carvings, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Continue drive another 40 mins drive to Kumbakonam where the temple is less spectacular but the elephant is perhaps the friendliest in any Tamil Nadu temple. Later proceed to Tanjore (1 hour drive) and relax for the day.

Moring visit the Brihadishwara Temple, also known as the Big Temple, is a magnificent example of Dravidian architecture. This UNESCO World Heritage site stands as a testament to the grandeur of the Chola dynasty. One of its most notable features is the massive Nandi statue, carved from a single stone, which is among the largest in India. The elephant will reach out with her trunk as you enter the main courtyard to make you feel very welcome in this most special place. You may also explore Tanjore museum and palace, home to an impressive collection of Chola bronzes, statues, and artifacts. After lunch, drive 2 hours to Chettinad region. Check into a converted mansion, offering a unique blend of heritage and luxury. Explore the village on foot or by bullock cart.

Spend a full day exploring the Chettinad region. Visit hand-painted tile factories, where you can observe artisans at work. Tour the Chettinad Palace, a stunning example of traditional Chettiar architecture. Also visit the nearby town of Karaikudi, known for its antique shops and vibrant markets. Enjoy the unique Chettinad cuisine, known for its rich flavors and aromatic spices.

Drive to Dindigul and continue into the Western Ghats mountain range. This will a homestay experience at the house of retired English physician Chris Lucas. Settle into this tranquil retreat, surrounded by lush greenery and serene landscapes. Spend the afternoon relaxing, taking leisurely walks in the hills, or simply enjoying the peaceful ambiance.

Take a 3 hours scenic drive into the hills of the Western Ghats. In the afternoon, visit a spice plantation to learn about the region's famed spices and their cultivation. Consider a visit to a tribal village to gain insights into the local culture and traditions.

Overnight in Periyar.

Spend the day exploring the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Start with an early morning guided nature walk through the forest, offering a chance to spot wildlife such as elephants, bison, and a variety of bird species. You will have several option to explore Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary by boat or Jeep Safari/Bamboo rafting, cultural program featuring local music and dance etc.

Drive deeper into the western side of the Ghats for 2.5 hours to Thettakad, stopping at a rubber and spice plantation for lunch before proceeding to Thettakad. Late afternoon visit the famous the Kodanad Elephant Training Camp where you can interact with elephants, learn about their care, and participate in feeding and bathing activities.

Early start for bird watching at Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary. Guided tour to spot various bird species such as Malabar Grey Hornbill, Sri Lankan Frogmouth, and multiple species of kingfishers. Afternoon visit a nearby rubber and spice plantation. Learn about the cultivation and processing of rubber, cardamom, pepper, and vanilla. You will also have option for Kayaking, Trekking etc.

Overnight in Thettakad.

Start early and drive 6 hours to Coonoor train station and board the Nilgiri Heritage Mountain train to Ooty. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ooty Mountain Train is renowned for its scenic beauty, charming vintage carriages, and the thrilling journey on its rack and pinion track, making it a must-do for any visitor to the Nilgiri Hills. Your driver will pick you up once you reach Ooty station and transferred to the hotel. Evening at leisure to explore on your own interest.

After breakfast, depart from Ooty and drive 4 hours to Nagarhole National Park. The journey takes you through scenic landscapes and rolling hills of the Nilgiris. Arrive in Nagarhole and check into your accommodation. Relax or explore the lodge’s surroundings. You can also opt for additional activities such as guided nature walks or bird watching.

Overnight in Kabini

Embark on an early morning jeep safari in Nagarhole National Park. This safari offers an opportunity to spot a diverse range of wildlife, including tigers, leopards, elephants, sambar deer, and various bird species. The park’s rich biodiversity makes it a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts. Return to hotel for lunch. Afternoon, join an evening jeep safari or enjoy a campfire experience if available. This is another chance to see nocturnal wildlife and experience the park's atmosphere after dark.

Overnight in Kabini

Drive 1.5 hours to Sandalwood city “Mysore”.  Afternoon explore Mysore with a visit to the renowned Mysore Maharaja’s Palace. This opulent palace, with its stunning architecture and lavish interiors, is a highlight of the city .Later visit the Chamundi Hill Temple for panoramic views of Mysore and an opportunity to explore this important religious site. Evening stroll through the vibrant century old Market.
