Historic Mattancherry Jewish Synagogue in Kerala
Mattancherry Jewish Synagogue, also known as the Paradesi Synagogue is located at the north end of Jew Town in Mattancherry, Kochi. Constructed in 1568, by Spanish-speaking Jews, the Paradesi Jews, it stands as the oldest active synagogue among all Commonwealth Nations. This ancient Synagogue lies adjacent to the Mattancherry Dutch Palace and is built on the land donated by the Maharajah of Cochin.

The Mattancherry Synagogue beautifully blends European and traditional Kerala architectural styles. Every corner of the Synagogue emits a mystical and serene atmosphere. Its clock tower stands out as the most remarkable feature. Inside, visitors can admire the carved teak ark housing four Torah scrolls adorned with silver and gold, along with the brass-railed pulpit and hand-painted Chinese porcelain tiles. An oriental rug gifted by the last king of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, adds to its allure. The synagogue is further embellished with glass chandeliers imported from Belgium. The paintings outside depict the history of the Jewish community in India and their contributions to local society.
