Thazhathangady Juma Masjid is situated on the banks of the Meenachil River in Thazhathangady, one of Kerala's Heritage Zones near Kottayam town. Also known as the "Taj Juma Masjid," the Thazhathangady Mosque is an architectural marvel believed to have been built 1000 years ago. Boasting a history dating back approximately 1,000 years, it is one of India's oldest mosques.


History

Thazhathangady Juma Masjid is believed to have been built by Habib Dinar, son of Malik Dinar, who introduced Islam to Kerala. Constructed in the traditional Kerala architectural style, the mosque is renowned for its intricate wood carvings and architectural beauty which attracts numerous architecture enthusiasts. The mosque features a square-shaped inner courtyard, a secret passageway, a water tank carved from a single block of stone, and its gabled roof is intricately adorned with wood carvings. The doors and windows of the mosque are beautifully decorated with wooden carvings as well. In 2012, its southern half was renovated and extended using iron pillars, aluminium sheets, and minarets.

Thazhathangady Mosque stands proudly as a symbol of the region's cultural and religious legacy. The ancestors of Thazhathangady Juma Masjid is believed to have come and settled in Kottayam, from different parts of Kerala. The Muslim community who lived here actively participated in the Freedom Struggle and other national movements.

Since 2019, the Thazhathangady Juma Masjid has welcomed women devotees. "Muslim women dressed appropriately are allowed to enter the mosque only on two designated days, April 24 and May 8, as determined by the committee.
