The golden sands of Marari

Unlike Kovalam or Varkala, Marari is a relatively new beach destination in Kerala. Clean, serene and pristine, this sea side is a perfect fit for people who wish to avoid the crowd and have a relaxing holiday. Suitable for families and honeymooners, Marari beach could be your next favourite destination to spend some quality time together with your loved ones.

Marari beach is located in the Mararikulam village of Alleppey district in Kerala, the famous backwater destination in the world. Tucked away 15 km away from Alleppey, Marari is gaining popularity among the travellers for its varied landscape and ambience. The ample coconut trees, ponds, canals and many other beautiful sights of this tranquil seaside is worth a visit in your lifetime. As far as the accommodation is concerned, there are very few great resorts in Marari, however, home stays are plentiful.

I have picked some of the nearby attractions as well, to club up with, which could help make your visit to Marari even more worthwhile-

  • Alleppey- There is no introduction needed for Alleppey. Go for an overnight houseboat cruise and get amazed by the scintillating charm of unique backwaters in the world. Savour some exquisite Kerala cuisine cooked exclusively for you on board. Other options are a 3 hours motorboat cruise along the backwaters, Kayaking, canoe ride etc.
  • The Mararikulam Shiva Temple- A brilliant 700-year-old Shiva temple, the Mararikulam Shiva temple is built in a typical Kerala style architecture.
  • Arthunkal Basilica- This 16th-century church was built by Father Jacoma Fenicio, a Portuguese. The structure faces the Arabian Sea and reflects the magnificence of European architecture.
  • Kumarakom- Kumarakom is yet another backwater destination like Alleppey. It is nearly 30 km from the Marari beach. You could opt for houseboats, motorboats [which is cheaper for sure] and even Kayaking. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is also worth a visit, especially if you are a bird lover.
