The origins of this majestic temple are not known, with the best estimate being that the current structure was begun around the 8th century CE. however the known history of the Padmanabhaswamy Temple is from 8th century onwards.

The deity’s idol here is the reclining pose of Lord Vishnu, and it is said by many devotees that a mere glimpse at the idol evokes a sense of spiritual bliss. The architecture of the Padmanabhaswamy Temple is like any other South Indian Temple and is no less than stunning.

The seven storeyed gopuram (gateway tour) which stands 35 metres high is the prime attraction of the temple. There are nine entrances to the temple which signifies the nine orifices of the human body.

A striking feature of the temple is the Ottakkal Mandapam in front of the main sanctum which is built out of a single slab of granite and its pillars covered by gold. Millions of devotees and tourists visit the Padmanabhaswamy Temple every year.

Please note that only Hindus are allowed inside the temple building. Other visitors can enjoy the grand architecture of the temple and its royal premises. Also, there are certain strict dress codes to be followed while getting inside the sanctum.

The temple has recently attained international fame following the news of discovery of vast assets inside the secret vaults underground. There are six vaults or chambers which together house a collection of gold, diamonds and other priceless treasures. Some estimates put the value at a trillion US dollars but this figure may be somewhat fanciful. Whatever the number is, it’s a big one! The collection makes Padmanabhaswamy Temple the richest temple in the World.

The temple vaults has been a subject of mystery for decades. Of the six vaults, it is said of one in particular that it must not opened with the claim made by the Travancore Roayal Family and its authorities that were that to happen it would bring chaos to the world and probably result in the end of the world!

It is said that the special perma-sealed vault is guarded by “Naga Bhandam”, some sort of serpent magic. It can only be opened by a sage chanting the “Garyda Mantra”. Altogether the temple is a delight for travellers and is a must visit place in Kerala.

The temple timings are-morning 6 am to 12 pm noon and evening 4:30 pm to 9 pm at night.
