Golden Temple - Amritsar - North India

Speciality

The temple is situated around a man made pool which was constructed by Guru Ram Das in the year 1577. The temple was rebuilt many times by the Sikhs after it was repeatedly destroyed by the Afghanistan invaders and the Mughal rulers. The temple was later rebuilt by Maharaja Ranjit Singh who overlaid the temple’s sanctum with gold plates. Hence it came to be called as the Golden temple.

History of Golden Temple - Amritsar?

The Golden Temple of Amritsar was built for the purpose of bringing together men and women of all walks of life and providing them with a place to worship. The temple has for entrances which denotes the openness of the Sikhs. The temple was initially built by Guru Arjun Dev.

Entry/Darshan Time:

The temple functions between 3.00 am to 10.00 pm

Dress Code:

No specific dress code is recommended for a visit to this temple. Still, costumes covering upper arms and legs are suggested as a mark of respect to the temple customs.

Festivals

Akhand Path which is the reading of the Holy Book Guru Granth Sahib happens whether it be joyous or sad occasions. Other festivities include, Baisakhi, Gurupurbs, Maghi and Hola Mohalla.
