Amarnathh Cave temple - North India

The Amarnathh Cave temple is located at Jammu and Kashmir of India and situated 141 kilometers from Srinagar. This cave temple is the holiest shrines in Hinduism. It is covered in snow most of the year except during summer.

Specialty

The water drops that fall from the roof of the cave forms an ice structure of the Shiva Linga. This Lingam waxes during the short span of summer and wanes during winter. This cave temple is considered as one of the seven wonders of India.

History

According to Legend, Mother Parvathi wanted to be with Lord Shiva who always remained immortal without any rebirth or incarnations. She asked the Lord to tell her the secret for his immortality.amarnath-cave-temple So Shiva took her to a place and on the way he shed all forms of life, even the microorganisms growing in the air. As he slowly whispered the secret mantra of Amar Katha, two pigeons that were flying overheard the Amar Katha. It is this place where the cave temple now stands. Devotees can always see a pair of pigeons at the temple site.

Timings

The temple remains open for devotees during the month of July to August. The temple functions during those days between 6.00 am to 6.00 pm

Dress code

The cave temple does not have any dress code but it is advisable to wear woolen coverings as the temperature is said to fall to -5 degree Celsius.

Festivals

The Pratham Puja is the first puja that takes place after the yatra is open and Chhari Mubarak which marks the end of the Yatra. These are the two special festivites celebrated here.
