Nagarhole National Park is a wildlife reserve and is also known as Rajiv Gandhi national park which is an important tiger reserve in Karnataka. The name of the Nagarhole is derived from two Kannada name Nagar means "snake" and hole meaning streams. The name accurately captures the essence of this national park which is home to dense tropical woods that stretch eastward through its core and a few meandering streams. The sanctuary, which is home to the world's largest herd of Asiatic elephants as well as countless kinds of birds, flora, and wildlife including large carnivores, reptiles, gaurs, deer, bears, and lesser animals is a significant hub for conservation under Project Tiger and Project Elephant. Ranking after the Corbett and Kaziranga tiger reserves respectively, it is one of the nation's high density tiger populations. This area is home to a variety of trees, including teak, sandalwood, and rosewood. The dry deciduous forest is home to a variety of tree species, including axle wood, Indian Kino Tree, Lagerstroemia lanceolata, and crocodile bark.
