In the western states of India, particularly Gujarat and Maharashtra, you can glimpse an ancient history amidst bustling, modern cities and explore historic sites. As well as some stunning beaches and scenery, Gujarat is home to many iconic wildlife species- the last refuge of the Asiatic Lion is here- while also being a reliquary of cultural diversity and some of India's most unique cuisines. Tribal cultures abound in this part of India too. Highlights in West India include the rock-cut temple complexes at Ajanta and Ellora- quite remote and really only visitable if you are based in the nearby city of Aurangabad for 2, or preferably 3, nights. In Gujarat, the state capital, Ahmedabad, is the only UNESCO World Heritage listed city in India, and worthy of several days to properly explore. Mumbai, capital of Maharashtra, is a beguiling mix of elements from around India, being a true melting pot encapsulating subcultures from across the country. There are also hill stations, the world's largest salt marsh, remote beaches and marvellous temples.

And of course, Goa: the smallest of India's states is also one of the most visited, and of course the beaches here are justly famed across the world. But there's a lot more to Goa- Portuguese history, lush tropical forests, emerald-green rice paddies and the bustling modern city of Panaji. But if it's a beach holiday you're after, look no further than Goa.
