Special Places to Stay in Rajasthan
Shahpura Bagh ![]() ![]() Shahpura Bagh is the perfect stop between Jaipur (or Ranthambore) and Udaipur but really it could be a destination in itself. Not only does Shahpura offer a taste of life on a country estate, Indian style, but from here you can explore rural Rajasthan by jeep, enjoy some of the many lovely walking tracks on the estate, go fishing or bird watching and also visit Shahpura village with its local artists. ![]() The emphasis is on low-key interaction with local people - the proprietors are descendants of the original owners of the estate and are deeply entrenched in the life and traditions of the area. The proprietor Sat and family members are great company, treating visitors like personal friends rather than hotel guests. Abundant birdlife, extensive gardens and a lovely swimming pool all add to the ambience. Shahpura Bagh is located at the base of an imposing rocky hill, which is topped by a small temple. The property was originally a hunting lodge. Rawla Narlai ![]() Rawla Narlai, located near to the fantastic Jain Temples at Ranakpur (about halfway between Udaipur and Jodhpur) is another former royal hunting lodge that has been converted into a heritage hotel. A stay here will include an evening ride through the streets of the village by traditional bullock cart. The area around Rawla Narlai and Ranakpur is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Jain religion, and for this reason there are something like 300 temples in and around the village. You are likely to wake early to the sound of temple bells and chanting. The location of Rawla Narlai is very interesting - at all times you are aware of this large granite rock like hill close to the hotel. It is quite unexpected and provides a great view from the hotel grounds. It is possible to climb this hill and visit a small temple at the top. ![]() ![]() Rohet Garh ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Located around 40km from Jodhpur, Rohet Garh is an excellent base for visits to the Bishnoi people who inhabit the desert region to the north and west of here. The Bishnoi people have a long-standing and very complex relationship with their desert home, leading some people to dub them ‘India’s first conservationists’. A deep understanding of the fragility of the environment and an obvious love for their surroundings makes these semi-nomadic villagers truly fascinating. And a visit to one of their desert encampments from Rohet is a genuinely interactive experience - not just a ‘watching’ tour, but a chance to gain an understanding of their lifestyle. The Singh family who own Rohet are also renowned locally as breeders of Marwari horses and this is an excellent place for equine enthusiasts to enjoy the company of these horses and talk to the Singhs about this unique breed. It is possible to arrange short or long treks into the desert, and not only on horseback but by camel or jeep as well! Accommodation at Rohet Garh is first rate and makes this a superb place to take a few days, or more, out from travelling to relax in a beautiful location. Nahargarh ![]() ![]() ![]() This very special place to stay sits on the edge of Ranthambore National Park. A visit to Nahargarh will not only give you a chance to experience a tiger-spotting safari, but also take in the splendour of this majestic palace. Nahargarh is a replica of a traditional Rajput Palace and its heritage feel oozes with the grandeur of the royal lifestyle. The huge rooms offer luxury accommodation at affordable prices, and you'll feel like Maharajas andMaharinis! ![]() Ranthambore National Park is famous for its tigers and is one of the best places in the country to see these majestic predators in the wild. The varied topography of the national park is also home to animals such as the jackal, caracal, mongoose, nilgai, sloth bear and leopard.
